What we do
MMU mountaineering is a club that allows people to experience climbing, hill walking, mountaineering and scrambling.
We do not assume any prior experience for you to participate, just that you enjoy the outdoors and like to meet new people of different backgrounds.
We organise subsidised weekends away to the Lakes, North Wales, the Peak District and even a holiday to Spain in the easter holidays (this holiday invariably involves climbing).
We train indoors at the Manchester Climbing centre and Warrington's North West Face on alternate weeks.
What kit do I need?
We try to cover all types of climbing. for more detailed description of the types of climbing we do click here
Indoor climbing centres
We can provide harnesses and at the indoor centres you can hire climbing shoes. We recommend you wear loose clothing for indoor climbing and bring a sandwich or two (one for me too!)
Outdoors
We will provide all safety gear inc. helmets and harnesses. However, if you have your own equipment you are welcome to use it. We require for all outdoor activites that you bring waterproofs, suitable footwear i.e approach shoes or walking boots (no Nikes, adidas et al). We also recommend you have a suitable bag e.g. rucksack. Unfortunately we cannot allow people to come if they do not have at least these three items for health and safety reasons (bloody red tape!!!) It is up to you to bring enough water and food for the trip. Other equipment you might want to bring with you could be:
- Thermos (tea, no sugar thanks!)
- Gloves and scarf
- Plenty of layers
- a warm hat
- Magazine or book
Weekends away
Weekends away are a major part in our club. they help build the club and allow you, the member, to get to know the people you climb with. As we are affiliated with the British mountaineering council (BMC), we have access to a number of climbing huts and bunkhouses. These huts are very basic and we are required to provide for ourselves. This means you will be required to bring a sleeping bag and enough clothes and food for the weekend.
