New Home for MMUnion’s Student Activities Centre

MMUnion has re-housed its Student Activities Centre as part of its ongoing commitment to expand the MMU student experience. The creation of a bigger, brighter Student Activities Centre is a welcome enhancement to MMUnion’s wide range of student services and facilities. The centre is now well-equipped to serve the needs of some 3,000 MMU students who are involved in running and taking part in MMUnion’s exciting range of recreational, cultural, political and sporting activities.

Andy Donoghue, your Sports and Societies Officer at MMUnion reflects on the move.

“The world famous Student Activities Centre has moved from its birthplace up on the third floor down to the second floor where the old pool room used to be, which as many of you will have gathered is just that little bit closer to the bar.”

“For those of you that don’t know what goes on in the Student Activities Centre I’ll give you a quick run down. The Student Activities Centre is the hub for extra-curricular activities which includes your standard and more unusual sports, and societies which cover a broad range of interests from the Neighbours Society right through to the hugely popular religious societies such as the Islamic society and the Christian Union.  It is in the Activities Centre that all the organising of various events takes place, things such as sports matches, social events and fundraisers.”

“It’s superb that we now have more space and resources such as additional computers and a meeting room for clubs and societies to use. Club members are also hanging out in the centre more, meeting people from other clubs and societies, and swapping ideas – it’s great.”

“The Student Activities centre is open on Monday to Friday from 10am to 4.30pm. New members are always welcome so if you’d like to join an existing club, it’s not too late to get involved. Check out all the different sports clubs and societies on offer at www.mmunion.co.uk to see if there’s something that catches your eye. Or even better, pop in to see us at the Student Activities Centre and we’d be happy to help you – that’s what we’re here for.”

“If you find that your interest isn’t catered for at the moment then you can always start up a new group with help and support from the Student Activities Centre team. It’s great to see new clubs and societies set up and what a brilliant legacy it is to leave for future students when your Uni days are over.”

“You don’t have to be an expert at anything to join in. It’s all about taking part, developing existing and new skills and having fun. If you’re not sure whether it’s your scene or not, you can come along and try out a session or two before making the decision to sign up.”

“So there you have it, a brand new, spacious and welcoming Student Activities Centre for all our clubs and societies. You don’t have to take my word for it though. Get yourself down here and check it out. See if there’s any sports clubs or societies that you fancy, if not we’ll advise you on how to set up your own.”

“I look forward to seeing you all soon in our new Student Activities Centre situated on the second floor of the Students’ Union building at 99 Oxford Road.”
