Hi all,
This is only going to be quick newsletter about upcoming trips, but it's an important one.
- There's a meeting about the Austria trip at Hardy's Well, Monday, 7 p.m. If you want to go on the Austria trip, you MUST attend, or contact Lewis through email or on +447971470793 if you're unable to make it.
- There is one space left for the Burrs trip on Saturday, meeting at the container at 10 a.m. Contact Lewis if you're interested.
- The Greta trip on Sunday is full.
- The Lakes trip next Friday (probably to the Kent) is also full.
- Next Saturday there is an 8 person trip possibly to the Conway. Again if you're interested contact Lewis over the week or sign up at the pool on Wednesday night.
That's all for now.

Hi all,
Welcome to the second newsletter of 2008.
We had a good turnout at The Phoenix and the pool the last two weeks, and last week we brought the new Ina Zone down to the pool and a few of you were able to have a crack at it. Also Nathan brought some balls and hoops down to the pool which produced some entertaining games.
While we had scheduled a trip to the Lakes this weekend we had to call it off due to the weather. It's the ironic thing about canoeing: you can't paddle much when it doesn't rain, and you can't paddle when it rains too much. We've also had to call off our entry to the BUSA Canoe Slalon so it hasn't been that successful for trips in 2008 so far. Still, all things being well (mainly the weather) we should be able to do some paddling in the approaching weekends.
Hopefully there'll be more to talk about in the next newsletter. See you all on Wednesday.
Mike (Secretary and Kit Secretary) and the rest of the Committee.

Ho Ho Ho Merry christmas.
Just a quick note for you all, the trip dates for next term are starting to come together nicely, however a very important one for your diaries is the weekend trip to the Lake District. It is going to be the 18/01/08 until the 20/01/08. This is the second weekend back after Xmas so should be OK for everyone.
Anyway put this date in your diaries as it is planed to be a mint trip.
Merry Christmas Guys and hope you have a great new Year.
Respect,
Andy (Chairman) and the rest of the Committee.

Hi all,
Once again I begin the newsletter by apologising for it not appearing sooner than now, a combination of assignments with approaching deadlines, the end of term approaching and a Maxïmo Park gig all contributed to the delay. But fear not, it is here now. And as a special festive edition. (Sort of)
From what I know there hasn't been an 'official' trip since the last newsletter so I'll move straight on to the Christmas Curry. This year it took place on the final Wenesday of term, (as always) and saw 10(?) of us going to the rather nice Shere Khan on Curry Mile. The food was good and after the eating this term's awards were presented. These awards included:
- the most committed member: Nicole
- the most improved fresher: Jenko
- the most technical swims: Lewis
- the most swims on a single river trip: James
- the most improved paddler: Ryan
- the lasting romantic relationship: Lewis and Claire
Some of you who didn't come to the Curry will have missed out of receiving your award. We'll get them to you after Christmas and New Year. After the Curry a slightly reduced number of us gatecrashed the EGS (Geography) students' Christmas night out at K2 before heading on to a packed out Varsity. If you want to know whether it was good, check out the photo gallery and see for yourself.
On to business. Lewis, myself, Nicole, Pauline and Emma from Crewe campus are going to be paddling in this (well, technically next) year's BUSA Canoe Slalom towards the end of January. It's at the Tees Barrage. Transport will be arranged in the near future but there is the possibility that a few of you can come to watch. You will have to contribute to transport and accommodation costs though.
Lewis is making progress on the Austria trip. It looks like it's going to be happening around June/July (I think) though if you want to know exactly when it will be Lewis is the man to speak to.
We'll be sorting out trips for next term soon though the method we've been using this term has been quite successful with only one or two minor issues raised.
That more or less concludes this festive newsletter, so from all of the Committee we wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Mike (Secretary and Kit Secretary) and the rest of the Committee.

It all comes out in the changing rooms...
Once again I’ve got a lot to talk about this week. The pool session last Wednesday was pretty successful with a lot of people learning new stuff and also the Tyne Tour happened this weekend. And then there was this Wednesday's pool session as well where not much happened really. Apart from the Austria trip being mentioned. This is still very much in the pipes and so dates/costs etc. are nowhere near being finalised but I would recommend everyone keeps an eye on developments. http://mmucanoeclub.7.forumer.com/viewtopic.php?t=60
An important note to be made about the meals at the Phoenix. Please let Andy or myself know if you want food because if you turn up without ordering we cannot garauntee there will be enough to go around. It's not difficult, all it needs is a simple text message or email.
Firstly, a debate was raised in the changing rooms: who is sexier, Lewb or TT? It turns out that Nathan thinks TT is sexier... which is random. And Lucifer thinks that Jack Bauer is sexy also and would be his man crush if he had one... which is random also.
Anyway, back what was going on in the pool. After the Tyne Tour I can't remember much of it to be honest, but it was a canny session. Nathan (sporting his new Hitman: Codename 47 look) taught rolling to a number of you who by the end of the night were rolling confidently and comfortably.
On to the Tyne Tour. Ultimately the weekend was ace. There was plenty of carnage to be had, and I'd argue that there were about as many rescues (of some description) performed by us as there were swims, including one random drunk guy and one random concussed guy from Sunderland University. And that was just on Friday night!
We also had a round of I have never followed by Truth or Dare, which saw Jenko nicking pegs out of Leeds (Met?)'s tents, Davide returning them (speaking nothing but Italian), Nathan sitting down with them and not saying a word and myself collapsing beside them. Random stuff.
On Saturday we paddled the North Tyne from Barrasford to Hexham which included a nice knarly section called Warden Gorge. It was rather fun, though some of you swam, but so did a lot of others who paddled it. Certainely the first proper river any of us have been on. (Myself included - the Kent was too low to count)
Saturday evening we watched the Hexham fireworks display after having the communal curry very kindly provided by Alice. And then Nathan produced several packets of sparklers which kept everyone happy.
On Sunday we decided to skip doing the waterless South Tyne and isntead went to the River Tees in Teesdale. That's right, you all went paddling in me! The run included some pretty sweet rapid sections and drops. While most of us portaged the Dog's Leg, Nathan, Andy, Nicole and Sophie paddled this rather sweet section... after waiting ages for the group before them to un-pin a boat that got stuck half way down it.
To end the river, we had Low Force to run. It's roughly 12 ft high (though I could be wrong) and was tight but a number of us paddled it without swimming, including Irish, Nathan, Ryan... A couple of you also opted to jump Low Force and the bridge just downstream from it. Not a very sane decision but not as mad as the crazy bastard from Warwick University who jumped Low Force (almost) naked.
That was pretty much the end of the Tyne Tour. The boats were packed into the van and we began the long journey home...
Photos of the Tyne Tour will start appearing soon but like the carnage league they will take a while to get fully updated as there is a lot to do.
See you at the Phoenix or at the pool.
Mike (Secretary and Kit Secretary) and the rest of the Committee.

Hi all,
It's back to normal business.
A few of you went to Wales for some paddling last weekend, taking our two brand new InaZones (one of which will find it's way to the pool soon) and bringing back one and a half. But it wasn't the paddlers' fault, it was the tree. (Somehow I don't think that excuse works Andy) Plenty of carnage has been claimed, totalling 6/7 swims and one technical, two recues, one pin king and one broken kit.
Lewis can't make the pool on Wednesday (tomorrow) but if anyone wants to paddle this weekend let him know, on the forum preferably, by Thursday morning so he can do thr risk assesment etc. The cost will be £15 to £20 and it will be a decent river. When you contact Lewis could you let him know if you'd rather go on Saturday or Sunday.
I've added more Tyne Tour photos to the gallery. (Thanks to Sophie for those) You've got to love the retro appearance of them. I've also finally finished the Oct. 2007 video so if you went to the Burrs or Goyt have a look in the video gallery for that one.
As anyone who's been down at the pool the last few weeks will have noticed we now have the full length available which gives you more room to practice stuff. It also makes it look emptier when less of us show up. Come one people, get involved.
Meals at the Phoenix are going well, but if you order food, please either turn up (ideally on time) or just don't order it. These guys are being generous and we don't want to piss them off, especially when we hope to get some more moeny off them next term.
I'll round this newsletter off here and make sure that the next one has more interesting stuff in it. Tales of Wednesday nights etc.
See you all tomorrow. (Hopefully)

Hi all,
It’s raining and that can mean only one thing, the Tyne Tour is going to be sweet paddling!
I’ve got a lot to talk about this week, first of which is the pool session, which saw the triumphant return of the s6. It also saw Alice (who wasn’t canoeing or swimming that night) getting a lift across the pool on the back of someone’s boat. What her reaction would have been if it had gone wrong I do not know, but it would’ve been funny for the rest of us.
A small group of us went paddling on the Goyt on Saturday. Water levels were low… again. It rained so much in summer there’s no water left in the paddling season! Never mind, we managed, though the day went something like this: Scrape. Scrape. Scrape. Water! Pin. Scrape. Scrape. Scrape. Water! Pin...
We had two swims courtesy of Zara, some crap driving on the part of Cookie, who managed to get lost trying to get through Stockport to Brookbank Canoes, and Claire unfortunately dislocated her knee which called and early end to the day’s paddling. Still, it was a canny day and Graeme was the only one who was affected by the water quality, or lack thereof!
Tyne Tour is happening this weekend! It’s a reason to be excited. I’ll drop an email to everyone with a kit list of what to take and when we’re meeting at the container etc. so you have all of the information in one place.
The photo gallery is constantly being updated, and I’ve finally worked out why Windows Movie Maker, along with every other bit of media related software, wasn’t working: Virgin Broadband PCguard. Now I know what is we should have videos soon!
If you want free food this week at the Phoenix drop Cookie (Andy) a text or call him by Tuesday lunchtime. His number is on the website if you haven’t got it.
See you at the Phoenix or at the pool.
Here cometh the Tyne Tour,
Mike (Secretary and Kit Secretary) and the rest of the Committee.

Hi all,
Welcome to the fourth installment of the newsletter. As I write this at least five of those who went to the Burrs on Sunday are suffering as a result of the water, but more about that later. Last wednesday saw the largest group of us having a meal at the Phoenix prior to the pool session.
The trip to the Burrs on Sunday was some pretty sweet paddling where there actually was some water. Unfortunately the water levels were pretty low but there was still some surfing to be had and the wier was still good to run. Cookie, myself and Nathan all tried to perform a 360° on the wier, albeit unsuccessfully.
Almost everyone ran the wier and tried a bit of surfing and had the opportunity to demo some shiney new boats. Lewb bought himself a second hand Pyranha s6f, Cookie tried the new Pyranha Everest, Zara demoed the Pyranha h:3 and Lucifer tried out a random playboat. All in all it was a canny day out at the Burrs and brilliant no one swam.
Unfortunately it turns out that the water quality was a bit crap and has left a lot of us feeling the effects, namely spewing our guts though there have been one or two other adverse affects.
Photos from the Burrs will be uploaded soon and also the Wednesday night and Burrs videos will be uploaded over the next fortnight if Windows Movie Maker starts to work.
Hoodies should be arriving towards the end of this week hopefully so you should be receiving them next Wednesday if not before.
Important points regarding tomorrow to be made now. We will need next of kin contact details etc. for everyone so we'll be collecting them at the pool which is probably easiest. We will also be starting to collect deposits for the Tyne Tour and there might be trip happening on Saturday but we're short of drivers so we'll discuss that at the Phoenix.
If the Burrs made you ill I hope you're feeling better soon.
See you tomorrow.
Mike (Secretary and Kit Secretary) and the rest of the Committee.

Hi all,
Welcome to the third installment of what was the weekly newsletter.
Thanks again to everyone who turned out at the pool the last two weeks.
A trip to Mile End Mill went down last Sunday (7th) which from what I've heard was pretty sweet. I couldn't go because of an assignment unfortunately. Anyway check out the Carnage League to see who swam, who pussied out and who got denied by Alice.
Hoodies have been ordered. If you hadn't got round to ordering them this time then fear not, we will at some point over the course of the year hopefully be doing a second run of this year's hoodies and also (for the benefit of older members) a run of last year's hoodies. That won't be happening for a while though.
On to the forthcoming trips. Tyne Tour is the dog's bollocks of the trips we run. For those that were at the pool you had to put up with three of us trying to get you to go. Fortunately you were all up for it though. We'll be bringing it up quite regularly over the next few weeks as it's one to be booked well in advance so hopefully you won't pussy out etc. It's the first weekend of November (2nd, 3rd and 4th) and will cost in the region of £60 so start saving up! We will ideally want to take you on a river trip before we do the Tyne Tour, so there are two running over the next fortnight. Lewis has the details so I'll make a guess at saying it'll be on the Sundays, doing the River Goyt/Burrs and costing around £15. I'll ask him to put something up on the forum shortly.
Also worth checking out on the forum is the free food at the Phoenix. 6:00 on Wednesdays we meet up for a meal before the pool session. If you're interested, let us know before Tuesday 1:00 pm
Other cool shit - I'm in the process of making a video of the Wednesday night pool sessions and once complete that and some photos will be uploaded to the media gallery.
And finally, if anyone has heard of/likes Amy MacDonald I'm selling my ticket for the 20th October gig, 7:30 at the Academy 3, for £11. Let me know if you're interested.
Have a good weekend, see you at the pool. (If not at the Phoenix beforehand)
Mike (Secretary and Kit Secretary) and the rest of the Committee.

Hi all,
Welcome to the second installment of MMU Canoe Club's weekly newsletter.
Before I divulge any further here are a few words (or paragraphs) from our Trip Sec. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Burrs Trip
Hey,
I'm not too organised yet but there will be a trip to the Burrs on Sunday 7th october, only requirement is that you've been to 2 pool sessions. We'll provide transport and kit. (Check the website for the kit list) We'll will be meeting at 9:00 ish a container (Didsbury Campus) and should be back in Manc by early evening.
We're looking to take about 17 people, cost will be around £14 but that's not definite yet. It's first come first served and we'll be taking bookings with deposit on Wed at the pool. If we can get enough advanced paddlers and demand we'll look at running a trip on Sat as well. It's a quality first river trip for anyone who's not done rivers before and should be a good day.
I'll stick more details on the forum when i get them, so either check it or I'll have it all sorted by Wed if you're too lazy to check the net.
Nice one,
Lew -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The pool session on Wednesday was a huge success. Thanks to everyone who turned up. We hope you enjoyed it and learned something new. Sorry that we're a bit limited when it comes to boats in the pool (blame the pool management) but we should have some more spraydecks within the next few weeks. We're also looking to get another playboat in the pool to go alongside the Sub 7. (Yellow Pyranha with S:6 on the back) for those of you that haven't already got an AU (Athletic Union) card (£5 from the Student Activities Centre on the 2nd floor of the Union) you will need one by the pool session on the 3rd October. Full club membership by this point would also be ideal.
Well done to everyone who came out for a few bevvies after the pool session. We hope to see more of you coming along to Varsity after the Phoenix Club though. The more of us that go, the more shiney new boats and kit we get to buy.
A few of you have already paid the deposit for your hoodies. Get involved people, these hoodies are cool and you only have until Wednesday 10th October to order yours. The design can still be below in last week's newletter. They will cost £25. All you need to guarantee a hoodie is pay a £5 deposit at any pool session.
See you all again next Wednesday.
Regards,
Mike, (Secretary and Kit Secretary) Lewis (Trip Secretary) and the rest of the Committee.

Hi all,
Welcome to MMU Canoe Club's weekly newsletter.
The Committee would like to personally like to welcome you all to the club and hope that you will all enjoy it.
Just to remind you that we will meet at the pool in the Aquatics Centre basement on Oxford Road every Wednesday from 7 p.m. till 9 p.m. After this we then proceed to the Club Phoenix across the way to discuss river trips or other events coming up along with having a few drinks.
Pool subs will be £3.50 per week, however there is an option to pay for all of your pool sessions for the first term in one lump sum of £37. This saves you money over the term and also saves you having to remember to bring £3.50 along every week. We reccommend it but at the end of the day it’s up to you.
In order to continue coming to the pool after the 3rd October you will need to at least have an AU (Athletic Union) card which are £5 from the Student Activities Centre on the 2nd floor of the Union. Full club membership by this point would also be ideal.
Every year we have Club hoodies made so we can wear them in and around Manchester as well as on club trips, both day weekend, and in particular the (in)famous Tyne Tour. These are far cooler than the Unversity's plain boring hoodies you can buy in the Union as you get your name/nickname stictched on the front along with the AU crest. This year's hoodie design can be seen below. They will cost £25. All you need to guarantee a hoodie is pay a £5 deposit at any pool session, with full payment being made by the pool session on the 10th October.
On a lighter note you can now see the our Fresher's Fair 2007 video on YouTube. Click here to watch.
See you all on Wednesday.
Regards,
Andy, (Chairman) Mike (Secretary and Kit Secretary) and the rest of the Committee.
