Leaving this page on the website in memory of that amazing year(especially beating cheshire in the final).
champions of the league
After spending most of the season on top, a 2-1 defeat at home against MMU Cheshire saw MMUWFC drop down to second place. As if losing to them wasn’t bad enough, seeing Salford move up to first position was like adding salt to the wound. Later results from Cheshire raised suspicion that they had played illegal players against us. It seemed strange that they only managed to beat other teams by one goal, teams that we had previously thrashed (no disrespect intended). However, despite this MMUWFC persevered with hopes of winning the league still very much alive. In fact it just made us even hungrier for the title.
Next came another home game, only this time against Keele. Winning 14-0 definitely helped our confidence and raised our spirits just in time for the final week of games. Due to postponed fixtures early on in the season we were left with two big matches to play in a week, and we would have to win them both to win the league. First came Salford who at this point were on top and, to put it nicely, full of themselves. This is always a grudge match but with so much at stake both teams were more than ready to battle. And battle we did. Even though they had the home advantage and some very annoying supporters MMUWFC won 2-1. However, beating Salford wouldn’t be enough to put us in the top spot. We may have won the battle, but the war wasn’t ours just yet. First we had to play Cheshire away. So on Saturday 11th February, with a crowd of supporters, we made our way to Cheshire. Sitting in fourth place they had nothing to lose but obviously they didn’t give us an easy game because they didn't want us to win the league. In true Man Met style we gave it everything we had and after a late goal we finished the season with a 1-0 victory and the title of LEAGUE WINNERS.
