We help thousands of students every year...

The Advice Centre offers free, confidential, impartial and non-judgemental advice to students at MMU.

We deal with just about any issue that a student comes to us with. If we can't deal with it, we may know someone who does. You shouldn't be afraid to come to us with any size issue. It doesn't matter if the issue is large or small, simple or complex - indeed the questions students think are simple can turn out to be some of the more interesting and enjoyable complex problems we deal with.

Many students who visit us have multiple issues. Whilst they may interact with each other they can be broadly split into several categories.

Funding and Benefits

Our biggest area of work is funding. This could be anything:

   1.  Advising you what funding is available to you

   2.  Helping you to apply for it

   3.  Correcting mistakes that have been made in your funding

   4.  Assisting with applying to the Access to Learning Fund (Hardship Fund)

   5.  Advising what welfare and disability benefits you may be able to receive

   6.  Helping you to apply for them

   7.  Assisting with challenging mistakes

Debt and Money

Debt and money is our second largest area of work. We assist people with:

   2.  Dealing with priority and non-priority debts (including negotiating new payment
        plans)

Academic Issues

Rounding off our top three areas of work is Academic issues. We help people who:

   1.  Want to change course or withdraw

   2.  Have been accused of plagiarism, cheating or other disciplinary matter helping
them to prepare for hearings and attending with them

   5.  Complain about university procedures and actions

Answers to some simple questions and examples of work we can do are available in our Academic FAQ.

Housing

Housing is another area we get a lot of queries about. They include questions about:

    1.  Deposits

    2.  Finding houses

    3.  Moving out early

    4.  Problem landlords

    5.  Checking of contracts

Our Housing FAQ answers some simple questions and gives more details about the kind of cases we see.

Other

We aim to deal with any query that comes through our door. Just because your problem may not fit into one of the areas above doesn't mean that you can't come and see us. The list below is not exhaustive either but it does detail some of the other work we can do:

    1.  Assist with employment problems such as unfair dismissal, non-payment
         of wages etc.

    2.  Advise on TV Licenses

    3.  Help you find doctors, dentists and other services

    4.  Give advice on transport options including bus passes

Further information on some of this is available throughout the site.
