What have we got then? There’s always at least one of the deadly sins we forget… Gluttony? Jealous? Can’t beat a bit of Lust! but what about Plagurism? The ultimate in University deception! From day one nearly every students gets the ‘What is Plagiarism’ and a finger wagging warning! But what do students really class as plagiarism! I’m not going to quote the dictionary definition, But basically passing off work of others, as your own! I stumbled across an article in the Guardian about a service I hadn’t even considered as existing! Paying a graduate to write your essays and dissertations for you or an ‘Essay Bank’. I was amazed to find that an Oxbridge Graduate could knock together a Dissertation for you for tipping just over 3 grand! In 2012 that will be a 3rd of a years Tuition Fees! I don’t know if you are thinking the same as me… but what first strikes me is ‘Who is paying £3,000 for an Essay!?!’ and ‘Who has £3,000 as a Student anyway?!’ But after a little bit of research (I deleted my search history after… I don’t want to look like I’m on the hunt for a 2nd easy degree!) There are 31 million hits for ‘essay writing services’… Wow…
Working at the Union I’ve seen a lot of times when times have got hard and students have been pushed to the absolute extremes, so I can see why these sort of things appeal to desperate students seeking a quick fix, However is it really worth things you miss out on with buying an Essay!? I know if I was having problems and was in danger of failing my year, I’d prefer to pay another £3,000 towards another year at MMU then to a Graduate or Lecturer to finish my degree for me! The point of university is to learn, develop and grow as a person and a professional, not to come out of it grinning from ear to ear with a piece of paper and a handshake!
So I can’t speak for the Students as a whole or anyone else, these are my own opinions! But if you are thinking of buying an essay, or passing off someone else’s work as your own, don’t cheat yourself make the smart more and ask for help. We have a fantastic advice centre right here at MMUnion.
It’s what you do at University that defines you, not your pieces of paper…(At least I hope so?!)
And on that bombshell! Have a read of the article yourself, leave a comment of your voice or come and have a chat! I’d love to hear anyone’s opinions on this!
To keep up tradition, here is Me a Sarah absolutely Thrashing our American Football Committee at Beer Pong during this year’s Super Bowl Party. Booya!
