As this is my first real blog (I know bad education officer) I would like to officially welcome the entire fresher population to MMU. Hope you had the best welcome week EVER!!! Seems like a light year ago! Working welcome week and not ‘socialising’ as a student was weird, really hard work but also a lot of fun!! Fresher’s fair was completely manic, and just this week I have claimed my free Nandos voucher thanks to their wheel of fortune!! Hope you all stocked up on freebies for the year!
As this is my first blog and I often get the question by my friends still at university…‘what do you actually do then?’. I thought it might be a good idea to tell you what my role as Education VP entails and what I actually do day in day out! Firstly I have to attend a lot and I mean a lot of university academic committees and boards! At first it was really strange and a little scary, but believe it or not the ‘big wigs’ of the university aren’t scary or intimidating and actually want to know what students want/think about the university. So I am well and truly settled into the swing of these meetings, even offering myself out for the occasional action or two. These meetings are really important though as they give you the student body a voice at the highest level which is absolute treats!!!
As well as our meetings, each officer has their own priority campaign. Mine is all about the real cost of been a student. As you know with the increase in tuition fees, students are now paying a ridiculous amount of monies to come to university, so we want the university to be transparent about actually how much students are going to spend whilst they are here! We also want to make students aware of the cost of thing so we have come up with a few fun things students can get involved with. This term, if you haven’t already seen it or played it, we have created ‘THE PRIZE DROP’! Make sure you visit a road show next week in your faculty to play game! At first you will think it is silly, and you may not want to even play but as soon as you do, students turn into crazy, nervous contestants who don’t want to lose. Really funny to watch! But it’s a great way to make you realise what you know and what you don’t about how much things really cost! Plus if you do win you get entered into a prize draw for a MMU Hoodie, NUS Card or a lovely Bobble hat! And if you don’t you still get to stick your hand in our mystery box of goodies! Everyone’s a winner!!!
Basically to cut a long story short, I am here to help you with any academic problems, no problem is too small. So please get in touch with me! Also not going to lie if you think something is mint about your course I would like to know about that too! We are all about spreading good practice! So please get in touch, add me on Twitter, Facebook. Grab me if you see me walking around! I Love talking to students!!!
p.s Course Reps are COOL!!!
