Following a serious incident in the Rusholme area recently where a student was assaulted, the students' union is urging all students to take note of the following Key Safety Advice issued by Greater Manchester Police:
- Carry a personal attack alarm
- Make sure all doors, windows, fire escapes are locked
- Never leave your keys hanging out of your door
- Don't take short cuts. Stick to well-lit, well-used routes
- Try to walk in groups wherever possible
- Avoid walking next to bushes and buildings, keep as close to the kerb as possible and face oncoming traffic
- Plan how you are going to get home
- Be aware of your surroundings
- Make sure someone knows where you are and what time you are due home.
Greater Manchester Police have released the name and photograph of the suspect and are calling for the public's help in locating him.
Commenting on recent events, Supt Barton had this message of support for students: "Incidents like this are extremely rare, but we are clearly very concerned and we are doing all we can to find the offender."
