We are looking to set up a a new Korfball club at MMU Cheshire, training on Crewe campus, and would like to hear from anyone who is interested in trying or finding out more about Korfball! What is Korfball?
Korfball is a fun team sport for men and women. It is originated in Holland where it is a major sport.
The objective in Korball is to score more goals than the opposing team, you do this by throwing the ball through the basket.
However there are three basic principles
that make korfball a unique game. These principle are the foundation for the various rules.
Firstly, korfball is a team sport. Individual skills are not unimportant, but it’s the
co-operation of the team that is crucial. You cannot dribble the ball or run with it.
No one can specialise in defence or offence, so every one gets an opportunity to attack and defend.
Secondly, korfball is an equal game. Every team consists of four women and four men.
To be successful, all players have to be included in the game, but female players can
only be defended by female players and vice versa.
Thirdly, korfball is a tactical sport rather than a physical sport.
Rules are written accordingly, and tackling, holding or blocking your opponent is not
allowed. It is also not allowed to shoot while being covered by a defender. This means
that you must combine the ball within the team to find an open spot,
before you can shoot.
