When a Mature Student considers a return to full-time education, there are many questions that need to be answered. In addition to the academic side of college life and the challenges it presents, the topic of integration raises a few questions of its own:
- Will I fit in?
- How do I meet other Mature Students?
- Is there a social side to being a Mature Student at MMU?
Well, there's good news!
MMU now has a Mature Students Society, membership of which is open to any and all Mature Students that wish to join. This includes undergraduates, postgraduates, full-time or part-time. Having just been formed in the 2009/10 year, we are just finding our feet, but if you are 'Mature' and interested please join up now and keep a check on the SU Mature Students Pages for information of forthcoming events and news.......
Membership of the MMU Mature Students Society is Free!!!!!... so please join by clicking on the 'add to basket' button towards the top of the page.
We will shortly be organising drop in times for Mature Students to meet, chat and discuss anything you may have any concerns about. A web based forum is also currently being organised and it is hoped to have this up and running before Christmas.
Please remember that this is your society and not just the preserve of the founder members; we need your ideas, views, and suggestions for what you would like to see being provided for all Mature Students by the Society.
One of the first things we have done is established links with The Burlington Society. What is this, I hear you asking! Well, 'The Burlington Society' was established many years ago to provide all Mature Undergraduate & Postgraduate (full & part time) students attending any of the MANCHESTER UNIVERSITIES (which includes us) a focal point for social and leisure activities. For some reasons it seems to have fallen below the radar during the last few years at this end of Oxford Road, but now it is very much back on the radar and will be the focus of our social events.
The Society has its own bar and function room just 800 yards up Oxford Road, a professionally manned bar; come and see for yourselves and meet some of the existing members, bar prices are some of the cheapest around eg.cocktails for £2.50. But it is not all about the bar. There is a full programme of social events to suit all, which runs throughout the year. There is a membership fee to join The Burlington Society, but it's only £5 and that's for LIFE! Once you are a member you will also be able to take advantage of any other concessions available to members. If there isn't something already catered for, which you would like to do, then suggest it and i am sure something could be arranged. You can join the first time you attend a social event - it's as easy as that!
Full details of The Burlington Society can be found on their dedicated web site: http://www.burlington.manchester.ac.uk/index.html
In the future we will be posting details of specific events, at both The Burlington Society, which will be the focus for our social events, and of our drop in sessions and any other news, at the bottom of this page as individual news item so keep checking back to see what's coming up this week and in the future. (see below).
Please feel free to e-mail any committee member with ideas, thoughts or views - we need your input to improve your society. We would be very pleased to hear from you.
