Who we are:

Amnesty International is a movement of ordinary people from around the world standing up for humanity and human rights. Our purpose is to protect individuals wherever justice, fairness, freedom and truth are denied.

And we're a movement that produces extraordinary results. Prisoners of conscience are released. Death sentences are commuted. Torturers are brought to justice. Governments are persuaded to change their laws and practices.

Our achievements have a huge impact on the lives of individual people. And your support makes us even stronger.

Our aims:

We have two main ways of working to achieve human rights for everyone:

Promoting general awareness of human rights

We carry out a wide range of educational activities, promoting the values contained in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and other international agreed human rights standards.

  • We encourage people to accept that all human rights must be protected
  • We encourage governments to accept and enforce international standards of human rights
  • We encourage governments, political organisations, businesses, other groups and individuals to support and respect human rights

Opposing abuses of human rights

  • Physical and mental integrity
  • Freedom of conscience and expression
  • Freedom from discrimination

OUR CURRENT CAMPAIGN - tinyurl.com/NO2COKE

Our current campaign is to get the Coca-Cola Company out of Manchester Metropolitan University with the support of fellow students. This is an action that has already been taken by The University of Manchester – they now drink Virgin Cola. To do this we need 1,500 students to sign an online petition for the university; that will satisfy the university’s bureaucrats and allow us to replace Coca-Cola products with ethical alternatives. See tinyurl.com/NO2COKE to find our more and join the campaign.
