Chinese boxing or Wushu
The Manchester Chinese Boxing Academy is a free style combat and sports combat school. That said, students learn a complete and comprehensive syllabus which provides skills to take part in any martial art competition and provide very effective self defense. The school has its roots in Manchester's china town where over 20 years ago students were taught a hard form of chinese boxing similar to that used in ancient china where skills from different masters were combined. Only effective fighting techniques and strategies would be kept within the system and continuously tested in real combat. So close was our schools way of training and attitude to competing to the original Ching Wu school philosophy in China, that Master Chu leader of the Chinese community in Manchester bestowed the name Ching Wu on to the club. This was the name of the school where the original masters trained.

The system includes long range skills seen in Kick Boxing and Thai Boxing, medium range skills such as that found in western boxing and shorter range skills such as those of Wing Chun and Chin Na as well as throws and grappling. In addition female and male students learn a Self Defense system which is practical and free from traditional stylised forms and therefore is quickly and easily put into practice.

The varied nature of the training which improves co-ordination, strength, power and flexibility is also ideal for cross training with other sporting activities including hockey, rugby and football to name a few. Students range from all ages and there is a good mix of male and female. Some have trained in martial arts or other sports before and many have never taken up a sport. Students have ranged from those studying computing and engineering to physiotherapy and law
If you're a student already at MMU and looking to join a fun friendly class for fitness training and self defense, why not drop in . Even in your last year of university you will have the chance to develop skill and fitness.
The Manchester Chinese Boxing academy offers the oportunity to learn a self defense and sport combat system that prepares those who wish to compete the skills to enter competitions such as:
• WKA Light contact continuous
• WKA semi contact
• Sanshou
Previous Ching Wu students have also excelled in the full contact arena.
