So, what is a course rep?
It's all in the name - course reps represent the students on their course! Most courses will have at least one course rep who acts as the first line of student representation within the University. Course reps are fundamental in ensuring the student voice is not only heard, but listened to as well!
These views can be anything to do with your experience within your faculty or department including your teaching and learning experience, the availability of resources such as the library right through to the pastoral support you receive from your personal tutors.
Course reps will sit on a variety of different meetings at different levels of the University decision making structure. This allows for them to raise any issues that you might bring to them. There are also University staff on these committees who help work out the best ways to resolve issues that have been highlighted in an aim to make the student experience at MMU the best that it possibly can be!
Course Reps usually start their roles a few weeks after a course begins teaching for a new academic year, your teacher should make you aware of the scheme, providing you with information about what a Course Rep is and how you can go about becoming one. However, if this has not happened, you can volunteer at any point during the academic year to become a rep for your course.
How can I be a course rep?
If you are interested in becoming a Course Rep or you are concerned that your course has no Course Rep then just get in touch with your teacher and the Students' Union (s.u.reps@mmu.ac.uk) who will both work to resolve the issue as quickly as possible.
If you are already a course rep, then we have a whole host of information for you on our dedicated
I am a course rep page.
Course reps are improving education every day
In Biology, course reps helped to change the timetable so that there was a break between long successive lectures for students to relax, refresh and reflect on their learning – much better!
In Sociology, course reps spoke to a lecturer about classes starting late and the impact this has on students. As a result action was taken and classes proceeded without further disruption.
