shopping with a conscience

Since Monday 29th November 2010, the MMUnion Shop in Manchester has been charging 5p for each new carrier bag that they issue.

This is to encourage our customers to think of alternatives so that we are supported in trying to reduce the overall amount of waste material that we generate. Every year, an estimated 17.5 billion plastic bags are given away by supermarkets. This is equivalent to over 290 bags for every person in the UK.

In addition to this we offer reusable Fairtrade cotton shopping bags.

We have also extended our range of Fairtrade products and will be continuing to offer Ubuntu Cola, the first Fair trade cola in the UK.

Ubuntu Cola was the first cola in the UK to get the Fairtrade Mark (back in 2007) and it fizzes with Fairtrade sugar from the Kasinthula Cooperative in Malawi and from the Kaleya Cooperative in Zambia. This means that every time you drink an Ubuntu Cola you are directly taking part in the Fairtrade movement – contributing to long term development and real opportunities for African communities. MMUnion’s retail outlets will again be supporting Fairtrade Fortnight in 2011, so keep an eye on the website for more information in the New Year.
